Fungus on the nails is a very unpleasant thing, whether it has appeared on your toenails or on your fingernails. The formal name of the nail fungus is onychomcosis.
The most frequent cause is moisture which is trapped in a place which is warm and dark (the shoes create the perfect conditions for its appearing and that’s why fungus on the toenails is more frequent). it can sometimes be caused by mold or yeast, and that’s why can be called nail mold or nail yeast, both of which are still known by a collective name – nail fungus.
What Does It Look Like?
You can first recognize a nail fungus as a white or yellow spot on the very tip of the nail. In time, the nail thickens, changes its shape, and becomes brittle or powdery, maybe a bit darker or it gets dull. The process of dividing of the nail from its nail bed is called onycholysis. This process is very unpleasant. Untreated, nail fungus can stay infinitely. Even when treated, they can constantly reappear.
1. Tea Tree/Orange Oil Rub
Tea tree oil has anti-inflammatory, fungicidal and anti-bacterial effects. This is what makes it a great remedy for toenail fungus. Orange oil can also do, separated or mixed with the tea tree oil. Keep in mind that essential oils need to be weakened before their application to the nails.
You will need…;
- 1 teaspoon of tea tree oil
- half a teaspoon of orange oil (optional)
- half a teaspoon of olive oil or grape seed
Once you notice the first signs of nail fungus, mix the tea tree oil, the orange oil, the olive oil or the grape seed in the given quantities. Once the mixture is done, soak a piece of cotton in the mixture and apply to the nail affected by gently pressing it and making the liquid come out. The mixture should dry naturally on the nail. As an alternative, you can put some drops of teat tree oil in a greater quantity of water and soak your feet in. hold them in the water for 15-20 minutes. Irrelevant of which of the two ways you are using, you should be persistent and repeat the process every morning and every evening.
2. Baking Soda and Vinegar Soak
Baking soda hasn’t got fungicidal effects, it doesn’t kill the fungus but, it is fungistatic, it prevents its growth and spreading. It is because it is alkaline, and fungus is known to thrive in acidic environment. This might lead you to the conclusion that vinegar shouldn’t then be used in the treatment of fungi, but, you should know that vinegar is a quite weak acid and won’t change the Ph of the environment, thus won’t prevent the treatment.
You will need…;.
- 4-5 tablespoons of baking soda
- 1 cup of white vinegar or apple cider vinegar
- Paper towels
- Something to soak your feet in
Mix the cup of vinegar with some water that can allow your feet to soak in. after holding your feet soaked for 15 minutes, dry them using the paper towels. After this, put couple of tablespoons of baking soda in water and soak your feet in it, again. After 15 minutes, dry them with paper towels. Repeat this process twice a day until the vinegar destroys the fungus, and the baking soda will take care that they won’t spread anywhere.
3. Just Coconut Oil
This is a way of dealing with nail fungus without using chemicals. Medium chain fatty acids have miraculous fungicidal effect. The most important thing that keeps the fungus alive is the fungal membrane. That’s why it is crucial that you aim to the membrane. Coconut oil is abundant in fatty acids, which naturally enter the lipid layer of the fungal membrane and disturb it. This disturbance is followed by a complete cell disintegration and destruction of the fungus.
You will need…;
- some coconut oil
- Gloves or a sink and soap to wash your hands between the applications
Take the coconut oil and rub it on the affected nail, after which you let it dry naturally. You should only apply a thin layer, 2-3 times a day. You should wash your hands between applications, if you have 2 or more nails affected.
The best and the most efficient way of treating a disease is preventing it. You can prevent nail fungus by keeping your feet dry and clean. Wash your socks after you have worn them once, wear open toed shoes whenever possible. Treating nail fungus takes time and patience. The re-growth of the nail also takes time. Apply the remedies regularly and diligently, that’s the crucial thing.
A tip for best results:
Take clean nail clippers and trim back of t nail affected as much as you can. They need to be disinfected and perfectly clan, so that the fungus doesn’t spread even more. After the process, rinse your feet with warm water, and dry them gently.
